BELIZE

Belize is a tropical English-speaking country off the north-eastern coast of Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea (east), Mexico (north) & Guatemala (west & south). It has an area of 8,867 square miles (22,970 square kilometres) with a population density of 17.8 persons per square kilometre. On September 21st, 1981, Belize obtained its independence from the United Kingdom. Its capital is the City of Belmopan located one hour inland from its larger of two cities, Belize City. Belize’s climate is subtropical with an average temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius).


The local currency is the Belizean Dollar (BZD) which has a fixed exchange rate with the US Dollar (USD) at 2 BZD to 1 USD.


The official language is English; however, the majority of its population is multilingual. Belizeans are ethnically diverse including the Maya, various mixtures of Caribbean, Latin Americans, Caucasians, Africans and Asians.

Companies and individuals in Belize are required to pay the following taxes:
Businesses, companies, and self-employed persons are liable to pay business tax. These rates vary according to business classification:

  • Receipts from radio, on-air television, newspaper business, domestic airline business and service stations (Sale of Fuel and Lubricants); at 1.75%.

  • Receipts of entities licensed to provide telecommunication services that offer real time voice services; 19%.

  • Receipts from “Other Trade & Business” (items not otherwise specifically mentioned in the Act); at 1.75%.

  • Rents, royalties, premiums and other receipts from real property; at 3%.

  • Income from profession, vocations or occupation; at 6%

  • Earnings of an insurance company; at 1.75%.

Requirments:

  • Director: the minimum number is one; can be both an individual and a legal entity. There are no residency requirements. Information about company’s directors is not publicly available.

  • Shareholders: the minimum number is one; can be both an individual and a legal entity; information is not publicly available. There are no residency requirements.

  • Secretary: Not required by law. The mandatory presence of a secretary was removed, as Belize is trying to get rid of unnecessary number of individuals to simplify the conduct of business.

  • One must have a real legal address and a registered agent in Belize.
